Since most applicators are straight and the vagina curves, many women find insertion to be easier and are surprised at their instinctive ability to know where to place their tampon without needing an applicator. Fingertip insertion gives a woman more control, allowing her to follow the natural curve of the vaginal canal and insert the tampon where it is most comfortable for her body. As long as women are comfortable with their bodies and understand the way tampons work, an applicator is unnecessary.
